8 Reasons to Visit Greece

1. Beautiful Beaches

Greece has stunning beaches with clear water. Many beaches also have full service bars with drinks and restaurants. You will generally need to pay for a seat in order to partake, but nothing beats a cocktail with beautiful views.

Famous Greek beaches include:

  • Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos
  • Voutoumi Beach in Antipaxos
  • Balos Beach in Crete

My personal favorite beach was Glyko Beach in Corfu. However, the mainland and islands all have fabulous beaches that are worth checking out.

2. Hundreds of Islands to Explore

Greece is estimated to have about 6,000 islands and Greeks live on about 227 of these islands. Each island is also unique in terms of what they offer. Corfu has mountains, while Mykonos has a great night life. Whether you are looking to hike, party, or go to the beach, there is an island that matches the trip you are looking for.

The islands are also a perfect place for catching the sunset. We recommend booking a boat ride on a nice day, so you can enjoy it.

3. Hospitable People

The people are really friendly and welcoming. Greeks are generally happy to strike conversations with you and the country is overall very safe. They embrace a concept known as “philoxenia,”which means to be hospitable toward strangers. We’ve also found that they are happy to provide recommendations for local restaurants, bars and places to see.

4. Amazing Food

Mediterranean cuisine is one of my favorites. Be sure the try the following:

  • Fava bean dip: This is one of my favorite dips. It has the consistency of hummus and can be served either hot or cold.
  • Tzatziki: This is a yogurt and dill dip, which goes well on everything.
  • Feta: No meal is complete without feta in Greece, so be sure to order some while here. Saganaki, which is feta covered in honey and sesame seeds, is a popular appetizer.
  • Moussaka: This is a casserole dish. It’s typically made with beef, but I’ve had vegetarian versions at restaurants around Greece. Delicious and very filling!
  • Seafood: I personally am a vegetarian, but the islands are known for their seafood. If you like fish, be sure to check it out!
  • Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt tastes better in Greece and it makes for a great dessert on a warm day too!

Pro Tip: Thessaloniki in particular is well-known for its food, having been labeled a UNESCO city of Gastronomy. If you are looking for a foodie, looking for a place to visit, Thessaloniki should be on your list

5. Delicious Wine

The Greeks have amazing wine and they have been producing this for about 6,500 years. There are numerous vineyards you can explore. However, if you don’t have the chance to go to a vineyard, be sure to check out some wine at a local bar.

Pro Tip: If you are in Athens, be sure to check out Heteroclito. It’s a wine bar, where you can try lots of different kinds of local varieties.

6. Rich History

Greeks have a rich history and there are numerous museums and ruins to explore. In fact, Greece has several historic monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Consider the following during your trip to Greece:

  • Acropolis, Athens
  • Archaeological Site of Delphi
  • Archaeological Site of Mystras

7. Picturesque Towns

The islands are famous for their beautiful towns, with cobblestone streets, flowers, and stone houses. Below is a list of towns to consider adding to your itinerary:

  • Lindos, Rhodes: This charming town has the white stone homes that have become synonymous with Greek island life. It’s very pedestrian friendly and also has beautiful beaches nearby.
  • Naoussa, Paros: Naoussa is beautiful and located in Paros. Explore the Venetian fortress or enjoy a cocktail along the water.
  • Rhodes City, Rhodes: This is the largest city on Rhodes Island and the downtown is located inside of an old fortress.

8. Great Weather

Greece is one of the sunniest countries in Europe, boasting about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. This makes Greece the perfect destination to beat out the wintertime blues.

Pro Tip: Greece can get hot, so if you don’t like the heat, be sure to visit in the shoulder seasons!
