I’m an avid runner and one of my favorite ways to explore a city is by exploring popular trails. However, it can be difficult to find out where to go and what the best routes are when you’re traveling to a new place. Below are some routes you can explore if you are headed to Rome.
Tiber River Path
There is a path alongside the Tiber River (Lungotevere), which is perfect for covering a decent number of miles. You’ll be able to enjoy the waterfront while passing beautiful bridges that span overhead.
Be sure to run along the side closer to Vatican City. The other side of the Tiber is not a continuous path. Entrances to the river pathway are typically located alongside the bridges (though not every bridge has an entrance).

While marveling the bridges on your run, watch for Bernini’s Bridge of Angels. This bridge was built about 1,900 years ago and is one of two ancient bridges to survive. Bernini, who was a famous artist and was responsible for many famous art throughout Rome, was commissioned to replace the statues at the end of the bridge in 1669.
The path is prone to flooding after rain falls and may be closed after. If that happens, check out one of the other below spots.

Villa Borghese
Villa Borghese was created through the work of Scipione Borghese and Bernini. It is the third largest park in Rome with wide paths that are great for running. Even if you don’t run here, the views alone are worth checking out.

Around the Sites in the City Center
If you’re a tourist, this could be a fun way to quickly see the sights of the Rome. However, these areas are popular, so be sure to head downtown early if you don’t want to get stuck behind the crowds.
There are also several running tours around Rome, that allow you to see the old city if you want to run with other travelers.
Final Thoughts
Are there other paths in Rome you’ve explored and would add to this list? If so, leave it in the comments below.
