When I was twenty years old, I embarked on a study abroad year in Heidelberg, Germany. As a result, I was fortunate enough to experience a range of seasons and times of year in this historic city.

While I’d argue there is no bad time to visit such a magical place, there are a few times of year that I’d highly recommend if you are a tourist, including Christmastime, the Schlossbeleuchtung, and when the weather gets warmer. Continue reading to learn more.

Key Takeaways

  • Christmastime in Heidelberg is so beautiful that it has even been the subject of a Hallmark movie. It’s a magical time of year to visit the historic city.
  • The Schlossbeleuchung happens twice a year and literally translates the Illumination of the Castle. It’s truly stunning and there are fireworks.
  • Nothing beats a beautiful day on the Neckarwiese. Come in the summertime to enjoy the views or to go hiking.

Christmastime

Heidelberg has its own Christmas market, which feels like the scene of a Hallmark movie (That’s probably why Hallmark decided to create its own movie centered around it!). There’s ice skating and various stalls for shopping, as you can peer above and enjoy the views of the castle. The Christmas market is also located in the historic old city, so you are surrounded by cobblestone streets and beautiful Baroque architecture everywhere you turn.

The weather can get a bit cold, so be sure to grab a glass of Gluehwein or Feuerzangenbowle. Gluehwein is mulled wine, while Feuerzangenbowle is mulled wine where sugar drips down from an open flame. This is my favorite drink, and there is a well-known stand for it in Heidelberg. All drinks also come in a cute souvenir mug, which you can either keep or return for a few Euros back.

Schlossbeleuchtung

The Schlossbeleuchtung (or Illumination of the Castle) usually takes place twice a year and is a great time to visit the city. During the celebration, they light up the castle and there are fireworks. We recommend going to the old bridge to view it. Typically, this happens once in June and once in September, but be sure to check online before booking.

Late Spring & Summer

When the warm weather hits, Heidelberg is truly the perfect place to be. My friends and I would grab small grills from the supermarket and make food along the Neckarwiese (on the other side of the old city. Be sure to go to a designated area though!). Since drinking is legal in public spaces, you can also grab some wine and beers from the popular Vetter, while enjoying the beautiful weather.

Late spring and summertime are also perfect for hiking in Heidelberg, which is known for. Check out Philosophenweg to see views of the castle or climb Königstuhl. There are numerous trails and old ruins to explore in Heidelberg and the neighboring cities.

If you are also looking to explore the nightlife in Heidelberg, spring and summer are also especially great. Clubs, such as Villa Nachtanz, are partially outdoors. Additionally, Untere Strasse is a pedestrian-only zone, so you will need to walk in order to explore the bar scene.

Final Thoughts

Heidelberg is well worth a visit, especially since there is so much to do. Whether you are looking for Christmas magic, to hike stunning trails, or to learn history, Heidelberg has something for everyone. Have you been? Leave your favorite sites in the comments!
