Surrounded by the ocean, Asbury Park is a beautiful location to enjoy the sunshine. This East Coast destination was founded in 1871 and was originally envisioned to be a seaside resort town. Until the 1960s, 600,000 people would visit this historic town every year. However, the town began to experience hardship as other attractions began to draw more visitors.

Today, Asbury Park has benefited from numerous renovation projects, revitalizing this historic town and making it a popular tourist destination once more. Our guide details where to go and what to explore.

What is Asbury Park Known For?

Asbury Park is one of the well-known beach towns, located alongside the Jersey Shore and is known for its music scene, vibrant stores, and beaches. Legends such as Bruce Springsteen launched their music careers here and the town continues to boost creatives and artists.

When is the Best Time to Visit Asbury Park?

Since Asbury Park is a beach town, we think that summertime is the best time to visit this East Coast destination. You will be able to enjoy the water and walk around. Additionally, many of the outdoor concerts that this area is known for only take place during the summer.

Where to Eat in Asbury Park

Black Swan

Aside from having good food and drinks, the Black Swan has a really cool atmosphere. They have distinct experiences located under one roof, including the Vault, which is an actual historic bank vault, and a tea room, which has big windows and mirrors.

Moonstruck

Moonstruck is located in a multi-story Victorian home, complete with wrap-around porches and great views. The first floor is for drinks and cocktails, while the second story features the main dining area. If you are looking to rent out a space for a private party, check out the third floor of this historic building.

7 Things to See in Asbury Park

1. Head to the Boardwalk

The boardwalk is about one mile in length, but it connects to other towns as well. Shops, bars, and restaurants line the waterfront, making it a great place to enjoy the views.

2. Go to the Beach

One of the main attractions of Asbury Park is the long beach, which is perfect for swimming, fishing and even surfing!

3. Catch a Concert at the Stone Pony

The Stone Pony is well known for locals such as Bruce Springsteen, who put this venue on the map. You can check out their summer concert series to catch a show outside.

4. Explore the Shops

There are numerous places to go shopping in Asbury Park, and you don’t need to limit yourself to the boardwalk. You can also consider exploring the following streets:

  • Cookman Ave
  • Main Street
  • Memorial Drive

These streets will also have restaurants to explore (including the Black Swan, noted above).

The Shoppes at the Arcade (located off Cookman Ave)

5. Visit the Paramount Theater and Convention Hall

Currently in the process of renovation, the Paramount Theater and Convention Hall is a historic building where famous musicians such as Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones have performed.

Although much of the building is closed today due to these repairs, there are still shops and restaurants that can be explored here. It’s also right on the boardwalk, making it an easy destination.

6. Eat Some Homemade Ice Cream or Chocolate

I would be remiss if I didn’t include the store with homemade chocolate and ice cream on this list. River Street Sweets was opened in 2020 and features numerous types of treats, including fudge, chocolate dipped pretzels and candy. We got several kinds of truffles and chocolate bark, both of which were delicious.

7. Play Games at the Silverball Retro Arcade

Known for its 1950s aesthetic and collection of 1930s pinball machines, you can come here to play older-style games. This place is perfect for a rainy day or for game enthusiasts. This is also located along the boardwalk.

Asbury Park is full of a rich history, a vibrant music scene, and a beautiful beach. Anything we missed that you recommend adding to the list? Include it in the comments below.
