Looking to make your way from Boston to New York? Check out our comprehensive guide below to weigh your options before making the trip:

Favorite Way to Get to Boston: Train

Train is one of my favorite ways to travel to Boston from New York. You can enjoy the beautiful Connecticut coastline, while relaxing. The Amtrak leaves from Penn Station and will bring you to either Back Bay or South Station.

The Acela is the high-speed version of the train, though there isn’t a huge time difference. Snacks are available for purchase and you will have access to Wi-fi. The downside of the train is that this can be the most expensive option, especially if purchased last minute. Tickets purchased in advance, however, are comparable to other modes of transportation.

Fastest Way to Get to Boston: Plane

In New York, there are three airports:

  • Laguardia: This is located in East Elmhurst, Queens. You will need to either Uber or take a bus to get here.
  • Newark: Newark is technically in New Jersey, but is very easy to get to if you are in Hoboken or Jersey City.
  • JFK: This airport is in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens. If you take public transportation, you will need to get to Jamaica Station (either via the Long Island Railroad or the MTA) to catch the Air train.

You can use any of these to catch a flight to Logan Airport, which is located in East Boston. From there, you can take their Silverline (which is free for those entering the airport) to make it to your final destination.

Cheapest Way to Get to Boston: Bus

If you are looking for the cheapest way to travel long distances, the bus is your best option. There are many buses going to and from the city every day These include:

  • Peter Pan
  • Megabus
  • Flixbus

Many of these buses will come out of the main terminal, Port Authority (though check your ticket before heading there). In Boston, you will likely end up at South Station, which is connected to the subway (red line).

Pro Tip: Port Authority can be confusing, so if it’s your first time there, be sure to factor in a little extra time.

Most Convenient Way to Get to Boston: Car

Boston, Connecticut, and New York all have heavy traffic, so it can take a long time to get from New York to Boston this way. We listed this as the most convenient, however, since you will have access to a car and more flexibility in your journey.

You also have the option of visiting some cute towns on the way, including Newport, Rhode Island, and Mystic, Connecticut. The trip can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours (depending on traffic).

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of ways to get between the two cities, whether by car, bus, or plane. Our favorite is the train, due to to beautiful scenery. However, how you travel from NYC to Boston will vary based on your price point, time of day traveling, and your final destination.
