About the Lava Show in Reykjavik & Vik

The Lava Show was created by the married couple, Ragnhildur and Júlíus. In 2010, Fimmvörðuháls erupted, which sprouted the idea for a way to see lava in a more controlled environment.  

According to Julius, “we immediately started thinking about how to recreate this experience in a safe environment and make it available to as many people as possible. It took us years to figure out how.” They teamed up with a company, who worked with SpaceX and Blue Origin, to create a furnace that was capable of the high temperatures required for creating lava. The show is the only one in the world to use real molten lava. 

A Review of the Show

The show was amazing and a highlight of our trip to Iceland. It begins with a video showcasing the history of Iceland and volcanic eruptions. 

Once the video is done, lava is released from the furnace in the back room. As the molten lava flows into the room, it glows orange against the dark backdrop. The presenter then does a demonstration and plays with the molten lava. We saw the lava turn into a bubble and our presenter picked up strings of lava with a special stick.

Tickets for the Lava Show

There are two tickets available. One is general admission, which allows you to sit on ground floor seating. The other ticket includes a free drink, seating in on the first floor, and entry in the furnace room, where the lava is made. 

How Long is the Lava Show in Iceland?

The show lasts between 45 minutes – 60 minutes (based on the package booked). If you go backstage to see the furnace, the show will last about the full hour.

There are two locations: one in Reykjavik and one in Vik.

The Lava Show in Reykjavik is located in Grandi, the old Harbor District.
